Psychotherapy

What is Analytic Psychotherapy?

We all experience emotional disturbance at various times in our lives. Psychological and emotional problems may express themselves through a variety of symptoms as well as difficulties in relationships.

Analytic psychotherapy is based on psychoanalytic practice and theory. It recognises that the causes of distress are often not easily understood or accessible to us i.e. unconscious and are likely to have arisen in our early experiences and relationships.

We know that patterns of behaviour learned in the past are often present in current life and may block development, spontaneity and creativity.

The confidentiality and clear professional boundaries of the therapeutic relationship enables the psychotherapist and the person (or persons in the case of group psychotherapy) to address these difficulties and explore the unconscious motives behind patterns of behaviour.

This process, which usually extends over a period of time, can free us from some of our symptoms, begin to heal the wounds from trauma or bad experiences and works towards releasing us from emotional blocks. There is the potential for living a more satisfying and fulfilling life.
